Angel Vernacular Statue
In towns like Arlington, Ma., religious statuary often embellishes the front yards of residential homes. This strong iconic image gives a clue as to the nature of the people living at the home. It is in fact part of the vernacular landscape. In this way, the landscape can be "read" through the objects and artifacts that populate it. These artifacts can often be rather kitsch-like, but they can also be rather beautiful when taken in context to a recognizable and somewhat common environment. These religious statuary often identifies ethnic neighborhoods and cultural identities.
