Le Corbusier Carpenter Center Arc
The Carpenter Center at Harvard University is one of the few buildings in the U.S. designed by the famous modernist Le Corbusier. It is the location of the Art Department, and one of several art galleries on the campus. The building is moulded out of concrete, creating bold forms such as the arc of the drum and the louvre-like bays of the classrooms. The uniform use of concrete allows for the interplay of light and shadows to become a central visual dynamic in the experience of the building. While the extensive use of concrete might be stark in some buildings, it takes on a sculptural quality for this building with the refinement of details and enrichment of complexity.
