Mt. Auburn Cemetery Gothic Japanese Maple
A gothic monument at Mount Auburn Cemetery in Cambridge, Ma. is emerging from the canopy of a dwarf Japanese Maple. Mount Auburn was created in the mid-19th century as the first cemetery-like park, serving as a recreational open space for urban dwellers in the Boston area. It has evolved into an arboretum-like cemetery with a reputation as a premier place for bird watching. This creates an unusual combination of people mourning and people bird watching. Most of the plant's have tags identifying the botanical and common name, making it an ideal place for horticulturalists and gardeners. Also, the cemetery is often used for taking a stroll, with the attraction of its many, many intertwining roads and paths. Thus, Mt. Auburn Cemetery's role as a recreational open space lives into the 21st century. Not to mention being a great place for taking photographs.
