Garden Statue in Cemetery
This statue of a Greek sage seemingly emerges from the woods at Mount Auburn Cemetery in Cambridge, MA. The cemetery was built in the mid-19th century, becoming the first "park-like" cemetery in the country. This landscape is located not too far from downtown Boston. During its early existence, it served society as a retreat from the industrialization of urban America. In fact, it was one of the first strolling parks where people often went to picnic as a family weekend outing. Today, it serves as contemplative place like many cemeteries, but it also attracts the bird-watching community. The garden quality of the landscape is enhanced by the labeling of nearly all plants with the common and scientific name, thus making it a destination for those studying horticulture.
